Analysis: "Ei koskaan enää yksin"

Photographer: Karri Huhtanen

Since 1996, Karri Huhtanen has maintained a tradition of crafting annual Christmas cards that blend festive warmth with professional insight. The 2025/2026 series, "Ei koskaan enää yksin" (Never alone again), is a masterclass in technological irony.

The "NSA Gnome" Character

The gnome is a personification of the surveillance state. As an IT security professional, Huhtanen uses the NSA acronym to create a parody of the "All-Seeing" holiday elf. In this world, the gnome doesn't just know if you've been bad or good; he has the data logs to prove it.

A Double Entendre of Loneliness

The title "Never alone again" addresses the modern paradox. While technology provides the infrastructure for companionship, it also ensures a permanent "spectator." The photos suggest that our digital shadows are our constant companions.

Visual Language: From Bokeh to Noise

The series transitions from warm, human-centric "bokeh" lights to cold, digital "static." This transition represents the journey of a signal—from the pure intention of a holiday greeting to the scrambled, intercepted data packets that move across the global network.
